Warden Milne and Grey County delegates heading to 2024 AMO Conference

Grey County Warden Brian Milne will join 2,500 participants at the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO)’s 2024 Conference in Ottawa Ontario from August 18-21, at the Shaw Centre.

The 2024 AMO Conference brings municipal and provincial officials together at a time when Ontario’s communities face complex challenges that outstrip municipal resources and responsibilities. The Ontario Government and municipalities must work together to strengthen our social and economic prosperity. This year’s event features more than 60 speakers, sessions and workshops, reflecting the broad scope of municipal responsibilities.

Keynote presenters include Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his cabinet ministers, Marit Stiles, Leader of the Ontario NDP and Official Opposition, Bonnie Crombie, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, Mike Schreiner, Leader of the Green Party of Ontario, and Colin Best, AMO President.

The annual conference is an opportunity for municipal officials to share perspectives on solutions to today’s big challenges, to learn, and to create new opportunities that benefit our communities. In addition to the conference program, municipal staff and officials will take part in hundreds of municipal delegation meetings with provincial ministries. Warden Milne and Grey County Delegates will be participating in three delegations this year.

The first meeting is with the Ministry of Rural Affairs to discuss sustainable rural communities and local challenges. Grey County is requesting that this new ministry champion policy and program changes to support improved access to primary care, more early learning and childcare spaces to address the County’s 2,600-child waitlist, attainable housing, homelessness, intercommunity transportation and road safety.

The second delegation will be to the Ministry of Transportation jointly with Simcoe County. Grey, Simcoe and member municipalities in the South Georgian Bay region are looking to partner with the Ministry to complete a regional transportation assessment that address traffic and safety issues in the area which is seeing rapid population growth and development.

The third delegation is to the Ministry of Health jointly with Bruce and Huron Counties to discuss the need for consultation and collaboration with all health system partners and municipalities to develop a plan to address rural healthcare and doctor recruitment needs.

Outside of delegations, Warden Milne is excited to take in the many sessions and speakers at the conference which will cover a range of topics including housing and homelessness, the opioid epidemic, public safety, climate change, Indigenous engagement, artificial intelligence, and more.
