Community Paramedicine
Community Paramedicine (CP) is a newer form of healthcare that shifts paramedics into a proactive role of assessing, monitoring and treating patients in their homes.
Grey County's CP programs are aimed at improving resident health and reducing admissions to local hospitals. Expanding beyond the traditional “response and transport” model, community paramedics use their training, education, and skillsets in “non-traditional” community-based environments with the support of primary care providers.
Grey County's CP program has grown to more than 550 patients (as of June 2024) and is supported by an medical director, nurse practitioner, admin assistant / scheduler, and a program supervisor.
In the community
In 2023, Grey County CPs completed 3,464 home visits, 673 phone visits, and held weekly rotating wellness clinics at community housing sites in Owen Sound, Meaford & Thornbury. In addition, Grey County CPs supported public health vaccination programs, provided palliative care, performed hospice COVID screening, and assisted with surge support for the 911 system when needed.
Supporting our local healthcare system
In 2023, Grey County Community Paramedics prevented over 300 potential 911 calls or local emergency department visits, helping to relieve the pressure on our health care system by providing in-home treatment for patients experiencing exacerbating (worsening) symptoms of illness or disease.
CPs will reach out to physicians and nurse practitioners direction if there is a need for urgent intervention - in 2023, that was 505 direct phone calls - less than one phone call per patient per year.
Coverage Area
The Grey County CP Program covers more than 7,500 square kilometres and offers support for physicians with patients living outside of Grey County borders. Service is available in both urban centres and rural areas.
